EXHIBITION : 4th–20th December Ten’s “Female in the Nude and Picture Book Craft Painching” crafted by jung jung

all_PR_1.jpg

ten’s “Female nude and picture book craft paintching!”
crafted by jung-jung

The power to enjoy time-less shapes.

A new challenge by ten_do_ten, an artist with one-of-a-kind stance in the ungraspable heave of “design”, “contemporary art” and “art”.

In this complex time of so many options for creative expressions, ten took on the challenge with world’s least numbers of pixels and slanted lines. Only going after timeless materials, he seeks to give birth to the unique and minimal world that springs within him. He faces today’s trends and our era with pixel expressions, which at a glance seems completely irrelavent.

Selected works from the picture book, "CALM & PUNK Book #1 ten_do_ten"(published in September by Calm and Punk Gallery) of female nudes in 10 pixels x 10 pixels format reborn through crafted methods are the center of the exhibition. A challenge by the artist to give an answer to the typical relationship between “gallery” and “female nude” with timeless “shapes” of “nude”.

Please come and enjoy the pixel world and the crafty space created by ten!

“most harassing!? crafts of my wife’s nude in craft painchiiiiing! she’s sooooo crafty, exhibiton~! please come~!” (dialogue by ten)

EXHIBITION : 1st–14th December 2008 Neasden Control Centre TAKE AWAY

R0018139c.JPG R0018145c.JPG

Neasden Control Centre TAKE AWAY

CALM & PUNK GALLERY is proud to announce Neasden Control Centre’s first solo exhibition in Japan.

Taking its roots from the humble traditional British caff or tearoom, ‘TAKE AWAY’ explores the development, regeneration and consequent replacement of traditional aspects of British Culture and street food.

As foods and tastes have changed these venues have now almost entirely been replaced by multinational companies with generic branding. Whereas mods, rockers, teddy boys and even punks might once have felt fashionably at home in Britain’s traditional ‘caff’, today’s young Britons are more likely to be found taking American burgers or Italian coffees in outlets that retain the same appearance, regardless of location.

Once the every-man’s temples of contemplation, what essences and spirits can still be seen? Are we losing our sense of identity in favour of a homogenized global mainstream? What is it, and what was it to be British? More to the point, what happened to our values when mugs of tea and coffee suddenly went from costing pence to pounds? Do any of us truly fit in the mould of new Britain?

Japan, which has experienced two major westernisation periods in the past, also finds itself in this homogenized globalism. However, there are signs of a return of Japaneseness in our culture, synchronizing the return of Britishness in Britain.

The artist will take up the residency from 1st to the 5th of December at the gallery, creating work live and in person.

The exhibition will feature previously unseen installation work, large scale pieces on canvas paper and exclusive printed material. T-shirts and zines will also be available.

EXHIBITION: 19th December 2008 — 1st February 2009 ‘I shall be Van Gappo! the life of Katsuki Tanaka, the artist of fire’

ALTOVISION_A_web.jpg 01_web.jpg

Katsuki Tanaka ‘I shall be Van Gappo! the life of Katsuki Tanaka, the artist of fire’

This is a landscape.

We see the beauty in nature’s symmetry, patterns, textures and shades, in flowers or insects or other things. Art began by attempting to extract such beauty. Advances in science and technology widened methods of artistic expression, producing new ideas of art. Katsuki Tanaka has likewise been inspired by recent technological advances.

The artist discovered the beauty of nature when he was small. Whilst making landscapes for this exhibition, he asked himself "what do I find beautiful?” The pieces themselves have a moving effect on the audience, but can also be enjoyed as a way of communing with nature.

Pieces featured in the exhibition include a large-scale landscape meticulously hand painted as well as an 8 hour long stop frame animation film comprised of 81,000 images. The exhibition will be full of ideas from the artist, who works using a wide range of media including lenticular 3D cards, manga comics and film.

To coincide with the release of his new book, "New BAKA DRILL", a gallery talk featuring the artist and Masakazu Amahisa will be held during the exhibition.

EXHIBITION: 7th – 26th November 2008 Ryudai Takano ‘Yuragi'

web01.jpg web02.jpg

Ryudai Takano Yuragi

CALM & PUNK GALLERY is proud to announce the solo exhibition by the photographer Ryudai Takano.

The passing of time is not experienced at a constant speed. It speeds up, slows down, stretches and shrinks, in accordance with our changing moods. In this exhibition, the artist looks at time and its altered perceptions. Photography is, in other words, a moment that is chosen then frozen. For a photographer, ‘time’ is a film, comprised of such separate moments. It does not flow, but is a fragmented sequence.

This exhibition features a selection of films that the artist has created over the years, featuring new works as well as pieces that were exhibited in Paris Photo 2008. For the artist, this will be his first installation using projectors and TV monitors. It will be an exhibition that will push his boundaries. The exhibition will offer the opportunity to explore the delicate and sensual photographic vision of Takano, how he perceives time and expresses it in his work.

EXHIBITION: 21st August — 3rd September 2008 Nerhol ‘SOURCE’

Nerhol「SOURCE」

CALM & PUNK GALLERY is proud to announce the first solo exhibition from the Nerhol artist collective.

Nerhol is comprised of Yoshihisa Tanaka, who "kneads" ideas and Ryuta lida, who
"carves" ideas.

Using various collections of printed words - such as magazines or books - as media, lida carves out something far more than mere reading material, while Tanaka is responsible for selecting prints to use for carving and other visual works.

The energy behind their creations gives a delicate yet dynamic feel to their work. The work is envisaged as something hard to define, as well as something that re-defines ordinary objects, and gives them a stronger identity.

This exhibition features the collective's representative work "ORATORICAL TYPE," and "SOURCE magazine "MORE"," a magazine that visualises the human desire for "information" which often exceeds what’s necessary. The exhibition will also show other new work.

Catalogues will be available to order. There will be an accompanying workshop, where participants can experience the beauty of type using their body.

By working together, the two artists deepen their meaning and compress it into a piece. This first solo exhibition will be a milestone in the artists' history

EXHIBITION : 18th–30th July Masanori Ikeda + Ani Watanabe ‘Two photographers in Saigon’

saigon-web-e.jpg

Masanori Ikeda + Ani Watanabe ‘Two photographers in Shanghai’

A story of Saigon, composed in photography.

After one year, 'The Two Travel Together' returns to CALM & PUNK GALLERY!

The two travel together is a project in which Masanori Ikeda and Ani Watanabe travel and take photographs together, capturing what they have seen and felt.

In the last edition of the series, they both took photographs with the MAMIYA 645 in Shanghai. In this latest trip to Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City), they used 35mm cameras.

With people and motorbikes crowding the streets, and children running through the markets, Saigon is a city that is constantly filled with the sounds and scents of humanity.

The two become conscious of the unconsciousness and release their shutters carefully, aware of each other’s experience.

A story of Saigon, comprised of the photographic prints from the trip, will come together at the gallery.

During the exhibition, numbered prints will be available for purchase. On the 2nd of August, a workshop will be held by the exhibiting photographers (details to be announced soon).

EXHIBITION: 16th May–5th June Yuichi Higashionna refract!

refrect_c.jpg

Calm & Punk Gallery is proud to present refract!—a new exhibition from Yuichi Higashionna. Yuichi Higashionna is an artist who works with a variety of subjects, using different materials and media, all of which play with our optical experience. His work in painting, film and installlation is unconstrained by form or method. Through his art, Higashionna questions our experience of seeing and what we have seen.

In the refract! exhibition, Higashionna will create installations inspired by feelings of “the uncanny” and of being out of place. His creations will provoke audiences to question their familiarity with ordinary everyday objects and phenomena. His humorous, sexy and fun work will be presented on a large scale, utilising the 5-metre high open spaces of the gallery.

He will be presenting several installations, including a new piece from his ongoing chandelier series and a work that incorporates fluorescent lamps, a mirror ball and the gallery floor. The exhibition will also feature a stripe-themed installation using rubber bands and other pieces utilising painting and animation.

To coincide with the exhibition, the artist’s first book will also be released.

EXHIBITION: 20th–31st July 2007 Masanori Ikeda & Ani Watanabe Two photographers in Shanghai

futari_rogo.jpg

futariani1.jpg futariike1.jpg

"If you can take only one item to a desert island, what would it be?"

"I'd take a camera, of course!"

Masanori Ikeda & Ani Watanabe
TWO PHOTOGRAPHERS IN SHANGHAI (FUTARI NO SHANGHAI)

TWO PHOTOGRAPHERS IN SHANGHAI is the first show of the series the two travel together.

The two travel together is a project in which Masanori Ikeda and Ani Watanabe travel and take photographs together, using the same camera – a Mamiya 645.

For this project, they took a trip to Shanghai - a city that is currently experiencing radical changes, and where bright modern buildings sit happily amongst colourful classical architecture.

The two artists illustrate what they call 'the happiest ordinary' - Ikeda customarily looking at the world of children, and Watanabe dealing with his preferred silent spaces.

Despite the fact that they are travelling together, a delightful difference exists between the work of the two photographers. It’s a photograph and a memory, a record of a journey into the wider world.

*Numbered prints are available for purchase.

There will also be a gallery talk from the two photographers, featuring special guest Hibiki Tokiwa.

The swinging light appears in the performances of the flowers dance collective. This light represents its own theme, which is the memory of the heart of akari (light). In the workshop the participants create a ‘scene’ using the swing.

EXHIBITION: akirasomecamera 22nd June – 2nd July 2007

akirasomecamera – Akira Somekawa’s first solo exhibition in Japan

Akira Somekawa is a photographer who creates truly original and distinctive worlds in his work.
Akira Somekawa’s photography is based on his unique philosophy of ‘disconstruction.’ This idea means that one must destroy to create, and by creating, oppose destruction. Influenced by the stylish images of the 70s, and the bright hues of the 80s, Somekawa's approach re-interprets those two decades, achieving a static beauty and colour in his creations. This exhibition will show a selection of the photographer’s work, with everything on show available for purchase.

EXHIBITION: 13th – 27th December 2006 enamel. 7th collection

enamellogo.jpg

Calm & Punk Gallery opens with its first exhibition of ‘enamel. 7th collection.’

enamel. have used newly designed graphic patterns to combine objects and space for the exhibition. Tableware, bags, and accessories designed for the show will be on display.

From enamel.’s invitation letter:

We are holding our 7th exhibition. The patterns designed are based on earth and rocks – they resemble leopard or zebra patterns. Ceramics are one of the materials we have been using recently, and indeed ceramics are made of earth and rocks. Also, we consider the pattern as material. The idea is simply constructed, ‘wrapping’ one material with another material. For this collection, we are ‘wrapping’ glass.
