Japanese pixel designer who connects dots to dots and design pixels.
Studied under Gento Matsumoto while attending Musashino Art University in Tokyo. Was a member of Delaware between1995-2001. Started [ten_do] web site in 2001, soon after 9・11. Works with dots as a pixel design originator, with sexy, domestic, crazy-stoic attitude, everyday. Past works include interface for cell phones, book designs, editorial works, CD jacket designs, web designs, domestic design works, collaboration and client works and exhibitions overseas.

CREATORS: Katsuki Tanaka biography

Katsuki Tanaka, manga artist
Born in 1966 in Osaka. Katsuki Tanaka studied visual design at Kyoto Seika University and started his career as a manga artist in 1985. After graduation, Tanaka ran a theatre company and also worked as a TV script writer. In 1994, with his CG animation “Kaeruman,” he launched his career as a film artist. Publications include "BAKA DRILL" and "OSSU ! TONCO-CHAN" (Fusosha Publishing Inc.). The DVD “SUNDAY” includes his film pieces. He also exhibited work in "Roppongi Crossing 2007 — Future Beats in Japanese Contemporary Art" (Mori Art Museum, Tokyo).

His new books "New BAKA DRILL" vol. 1 and vol.2 will be released in November, and his new DVD ‘ALTOVISION’ will be released in December.

CREATORS: Neasden Control Centre biography

Stephen Smith who has worked under the name Neasden Control Centre works
broadly across disciplines in creative direction, graphic, installation,
film and motion. Since its establishment in the 90's, Smith continues to
develop by hand a raw, layered, collaged, and primal approach while
expanding in scope and vision. The mission is always to remain experimental
and diverse working closely with clients, curators, galleries and
institutions on a broad range of specific print executions, billboards and
other one-off projects. NCC has released three monographs/books: Neasden
Control Centre (Die Gestalten Verlag, 2003); Smithfield Building (Rojo,
2006); and Lost Control (Die Gestalten Verlag, 2007). Both the 2003 and 2006
books have sold out. Other work includes editioned screen prints, zines and
working with universities / publishing houses on a broad range of
exhibitions, public programs, installations, talks and workshops. NCC has
exhibited widely including installation commissions for Scope Art Fair in
Basel, Switzerland and the Nam June Paik Center in South Korea as well as
solo exhibitions across Europe and in Group Shows that include the Spank The
Monkey exhibition at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, UK where NCC
together with Banksy and David Shrigley were the three invited British
artists. As well as regular commissions, NCC has attracted Arts Council of
England and British Council support for its projects.

2006 Received the 31st Kimura Ihei Award for his book ‘IN MY ROOM’ (Sokyusha, 2005)

CREATORS: Nerhol biography

Nerhol is comprised of Yoshihisa Tanaka, who ‘knead’ ideas and Ryuta IIda who ‘carves’ ideas.

Yoshihisa Tanaka biography
Born 1980, Shizuoka.
After graduating from Musashino Art University Tanaka has worked at Tycoon Graphics, before setting up COIL inc. Tanaka makes new symbols and types, by braking up the existing types, and reconstructing them.
Past exhibitions include: HIN to SHINA, Collet Speak for (Tokyo, 2006) Everyday by Collex (Kobe, 2007), Heiwa Shigyo PAPER VOICE, Design Tide GUEST BOOTH.
Nominated for JAGDA 2007 and 2008.

Ryuta Iida biography
Born 1981, Shizuoka.
Graduated from Sculpture, Fine Art Department, Nihon University
Iida makes work with words and types, in other words, accumulations of information. Taking paper and types as a medium, with a perspective of book as a accumulation of time, Iida makes sculptures using books. The results are the extraordinary visuals with delicate details. By making the images inside the books clearer and representing it, Iida visualises the mobility of the included types and information.
Iida won the Grand Prix Prize at the Recruit’s Hitotsubo Exhibition in 2004. Past exhibitions include: fact of accumulation o7, graf media gm (Osaka, 2007) and oratorycal inventory o7, Bunkamura gallery (Tokyo, 2007).

CREATORS: Martha Cooper biography

A photographer with a career spanning 45 years, Martha Cooper started taking documentary photographs of graffiti art and breakdancing in the 70s. Later her focus broadened to include hip hop culture. "SUBWAY ART" and "HIPHOP FILE" became bibles to many who admire street art and hip hop.

Aiko Nakagawa has been an influence on the street art scene as a founder of the artist collective FAILE for a long time. Her name appered in the Sotheby's catalogue as one of the most influential figures in street art along with Banksy, Faile, and Bast. CREATORS:Yuichi Higashionna

Artist. Born and resides in Tokyo.
Since the early 1990s, Higashionna has made art pieces incorporating fanshii (a Japanese word derived from the English word ‘fancy’) things from everyday environments, drawing attention to their ‘uncanniness.’

Amongst his most well-known works are the chandelier series, which uses circular fluorescent lamps, and the FL (flower) series, in which he stencilled fake flowers and lace using spray paint.

Wataru Komachi
Born in Tokyo, currently working in Tokyo and Paris.
Past exhibitions include the ‘Recover’ series using used sofas and chairs at THE DEEP GALLERY (Tokyo, 2000) and ‘La Plages’ at Colette (Paris, 2000) and Christophe Lemaire boutique (Paris, 2000). He has also designed a tour t-shirt for Beck, and in 2005 was awarded the Design Tide/Best Tokyo Award.

Masanori Ikeda
Photographer
Masanori Ikeda was born in Yokohama in 1978. He started working at his own studio in 1999, whilst studying at the Soukei Academy of Fine art & Design. Many pieces from the portrait series 'Kyuujitsu no shashinkan' (‘photography studio on holiday’) have been shown at various galleries and museums including UPLINK gallery, Gendai Bijutsu Seisakujo, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.
In 2006, Ikeda set up the 'Yukai' photography studio. He works across different fields in photography – for magazines, advertising and music. Recent projects include: Bijutsu Techo, ART iT, NUET 06, HONDA Spike Sound Garage and JT D-spec H/R/C.
He also enjoys playing music, with his band 'Yukai'.

Ani Watanabe was born in Yokohama in 1964. After time spent working for Light Publicity, he set up Ninja Films in 1999. Watanabe is known for the art direction/graphic design for 45 rpm and HENRY CUIR as well as for various television programmes. In 2006, Watanabe began to further his photogrpahy work, mainly working for magazines and fashion catalogues. He has a regular column in PhotoGRAPHICA(MdN). Two photographers in Shanghai will be his first exhibition.

Akira Somekawa
was born in 1970 in Kanagawa, Japan.

After time spent working at a photography studio, Somekawa moved to the UK in 1995. He participated in various commercial photography shoots as an assistant for Jonathan De Villers. In 2001, Somekawa had his first solo exhibition at Show Room (UK), and participated in a touring group exhibition at Jam Factory. In 2002, he exhibited at the ‘This is me’ exhibition which toured Tokyo, NY, London, Paris and LA. His work was featured in ‘Porn?’ (published by Vision On, 2003), along with work from many well-known artists including Nick Knight, SolveSundsbo, Sean Ellis, Terry Richardson, Luis Sanchis, and Guido Mocafico. He returned to his native Japan in 2005 and now works on various photography for magazines and music video projects in Tokyo.

flowers begun to perform in 1995, heralded by Yumi Yoshimoto. By changing cast for every production, the flowers dance collective have created many multidimensional and unique pieces. Refusing to restrict their activities to established theatres, they have performed in a variety of unique venues; reading rooms, abandoned buildings, garages – wherever they were attracted to.

Makoto Matsushima was a member of a Japanese dance company Pappa TARAHUMARA for 23 years. He participated in most of the company's productions as a main performer and an artist. He left the company in 2006, and now works on a freelance basis.
Matsushima began performing as a solo artist in 1995. His work is based on his own belief of ‘KOKOROMINOKOKORO'. His endeavours stretch beyond drama and dance, into art, 3-D objects, voice, direction, musicals and choreography for commercial films. Recently he has put emphasis on an intense 1 to 1 collaboration.

Percussionist
In 1981, Ogimi won an award in the YAHAMA EAST WEST competition.
In 1984, he formed his own band Orquesta de La Luz, praised by local Hispanics in New York. After returning to Japan in 1996, he formed SALSA SWINGOZA and continues to play live as well as participating in gigs and recordings with other musicians.

naoki kita
Violinist.
Kita graduated from Kunitachi College of Music and studied composition and arrangements under Ian Gardiner in the UK, as well as studying violin under Fernando Suarez Paz in Argentina.

To paint. To play with beauty, using colours and lines. By simply painting, Matsuoka discovers the fun of creation. He also works using embroidery.

With the collective Souma, he enjoys the 'conversation of film, sound and pictures'. He has previously created cover artwork for a Paul Auster poetry collection, and participated in L'ECLAIREUR(Paris) and pop-comm(BERLIN).

In 1999 Symbolon moved to the UK. He started to work as a freelance illustrator in London in 2000. He is renowned for his sexy and fantastical illustrations using shadows and silhouettes.
In 2004, he moved to Tokyo and since then has worked on a variety of projects. Recent projects include illustrations for some US and French magazines, Dolby Laboratories and Super Lovers (GOBACK2D).
In 2006, he was commissioned to work on the visuals for Impulse at Macy's.

Makoto Matsushima was a member of a Japanese dance company Pappa TARAHUMARA for 23 years. He participated in most of the company's productions as a main performer and an artist. He left the company in 2006, and now works on a freelance basis.

Matsushima began performing as a solo artist in 1995. His work is based on his own belief of ‘KOKOROMINOKOKORO'. His endeavours stretch beyond drama and dance, into art, 3-D objects, voice, direction, musicals and choreography for commercial films. Over the past few years, he has worked on the theme of 'urban environment and people'. His unique view is highly acclaimed both in and outside Japan, and has resulted in his contribution to projects in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao, Berlin, Amsterdam and Estonia. He is a travelling performer, who spends half of the year abroad. Recently he has put emphasis on an intense 1 to 1 collaboration.

This completely new approach to performance dance combines Michael Schumacher’s ‘Contact Improvisation’ style with Matsushima’s ‘Budo (martial arts)’ technique. Performed at close quarters, this upfront spectacle aims to shake up audiences, and inspire those jaded with modern life.

CREATORS: Michael Schumacher

Michael Schumacher was born in Idaho, USA and is now based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. After receiving a B.F.A. in Dance from the Juilliard School, Schumacher has danced professionally with Ballet Frankfurt, Twyla Tharp Dance and the Pretty Ugly Dance Company. His work as a principal with Ballet Frankfurt, where he was choreographed by William Forsythe, received much critical claim. Schumacher is currently based in Amsterdam where he performs with the Magpie Music Dance Company, a collective of dancers, musicians, a visual artist, a lighting designer, and video artists. He also participates in various side-projects as a choreographer and performer on a freelance basis.
